Happy 7th birthday Addison!!!

Happy birthday to my sweet Addison! You turned 7 today. I still remember being told your lungs were developed enough to head to the hospital. We were waiting for the call, and just as we were all getting ready to head out to dinner. So Dad and I went to the Hospital and ate hospital food (yuck!), and Grandma H, Aunt Tara and Uncle Ed got real food! They started the induction and you were born early the following morning. Daddy still has to work on remembering your birthday because the 22nd is ingrained in his memory because that's the day (night actually) that we went to the hospital.
Surprise to both mom and dad, you slept in on your birthday this year. We actually had to wake you up! We made birthday waffles the day before, so you enjoyed them again with nutella! You ate breakfast and got to open your presents before school! You loved the button, showing the whole world that today is your birthday! You thought it was all over, and we made you close your eyes. You were so excited to get a new bike, complete with a big basket on front that will let you carry your dolls as you ride along.
Showered but still waking up!
My 7 year old!
The bike!!!!
You've had this thing for glasses, and have actually been disappointed the last two years that you didn't need them...so we found some play glasses. You loved them! It was cute to see. It is just one more example of your independence, which you are showing more and more every day!
We enjoyed a starbucks treat at lunch and your tumbling class sang to you! We had spaghetti, asparagus and garlic bread for dinner and you LOVED it! You told dad this was the best dinner EVER. Well, you are the best daughter EVER! We love you and can't believe it's been 7 years since you were born.
Visions to come!!!

Celebrating with Grandma and Grandpa B

Since Addison's birthday day was on a Monday this year, we celebrated with Grandma and Grandpa B the night before. Between homework and activities, it was just easier! Plus, Addie wanted ribs and those are so much easier to make on the weekend. Addison was so excited for her birthday this year! Not that she hasn't been in years past, but 7 apparently is a magic number! Addison had to change for dinner! I absolutely love that she loves the "girly stuff" but will go play in the mud in it if given the opportunity. I think that everyone should have a twirly dress...they make everything great!
My baby!!!
We enjoyed a yummy dinner of ribs, sweet beans and broccolini. No birthday celebration is complete without cupcakes (I save the cake for the party). This year, I tried S'Mores cupcakes. I didn't have one, but everyone else said they were good! Dave and Addison loved that they had gluten in them...it's the little things around here! Jackson enjoyed the GF carrot cake muffin. All in all, it was a special celebration for my very special girl!
Modeling the earmuffs for her American Girl doll from Uncle Bubba!
Singing Happy Birthday!
Yum!!!

Adoption plans ?!?!?

Feeling the love this Valentine's Day.
Last week, I had both kids in the car and we were headed to tumbling (Jackson) and dance (Addison). As with most of our conversations, this one came out of the blue. Addison was talking about her American Girl dolls and how she was going to be a good mom one day. I reinforced this. (I love nothing more to watch her play with and take care of her babies. She loves them with all her heart and could spend all day playing with them.) Almost mid-sentence, she asked me if it hurt when the baby was pulled out of the mom. I said yes, it does hurt, but that it's ok. She sat quietly for a few minutes and then told me she thinks she wants to adopt. It took all of my strength not to laugh because of the seriousness in her voice. I said that was always a good option. She then asked where you go to adopt and I told her that there were special people who worked with parents who want to adopt. Jackson then chimed in and said that you just go to a "nursery or a children's hospital."

I tell this to remember because one day, they will understand the humor behind this at their age. And one day, if either of them choose to adopt, they will share the love they have and that child will be blesses beyond belief.

Letter to Jackson

Dear Jackson,

Wow! Nine years have gone by since you came into my life, into our lives. And I cannot imagine a time without you. You gave me the chance to be a mom. I can still remember the day I found out I was pregnant with you. I remember the joy and excitement just bursting. It was almost surreal and I remember just telling it to myself over and over again to have something tangible to make it real because at that point, I was only 4 weeks along and couldn't "feel" much that was different. I wasn't supposed to say anything, but I was soo excited. I remember calling my mom on the way down the hill to work and making her swear not to tell. I'm sure she told your grandpa.

In one more year you will enter the double digit phase in life. What that means for us, I have no idea. You have taught me that no matter how many "parenting" books I read, real life is all it's own. Real life ebbs and flows in no was any book has prepared me for. Your first nine years have been filled with such amazing ups (and downs if I'm being honest) that I know I never felt prepared. Jackson, I always thought I was made to be a mom. I was an awesome babysitter. I had been a camp counselor and a nanny. I took the child development classes in college, I even took it a step further for school counseling. But as your mom, holy cow! You are such an amazing and complex kiddo that there is definitely truth to the fact that one is never prepared to be a mom. But there is also truth to the fact, at least that we believe, that God only gives us what we can handle.

Jackson, I don't always feel equipped to "handle" what you bring me. Sometimes it's questions about life, history or even this last week math (and by the way, when did math change?). And love, sometimes I get very jealous of your dad because he is sooo good at connecting with you and talking with you. But we make a good team, and we especially make a good team for you.

You have always been an inquisitive kid. One who doesn't accept any answer at face value. It's a great trait bug, and we are constantly working on how to ask those questions. You are bright and creative, and you are starting to understand humor and sarcasm. It's funny and exciting because it's you on a whole new level. Jackson, you have a wit about you that is absolutely amazing. And as you continue to capture it and develop it, I have no doubt that you will be as funny as the next guy, and possibly even funnier because your jokes are typically regular comments that are made to be play on words. They are hilarious!

You do and I'm sure always will go fast. Sometimes I try to imagine what your brain is thinking at any given moment and I can't. I know you are processing life at such a faster speed than I am bug. That's just how your brain works. We are learning, and getting better each day!

You love history books and nonfiction books. You are constantly pouring over them and telling us facts about whatever topic is at hand. You love to play and have fun, most recently playing chess and putting together legos. You will sit and do these for hours. You also LOVE to play outside. You have games you play that light up your world.
Jackson, you are still so loving and are keeping that side of you. You love when I come for lunch at your school. You don't always want me right by you, but you want to know that I am there. And I promise you bug, I am always there. You are always learning and wanting to know more. Your teacher tells me that you hear things once and that's it. You don't need to hear them again because you've got it. I love how you are willing to help other students once you've got it because we don't all learn the same way and when push comes to shove, your tender part comes out. Jackson, you have a very strong sense of right and wrong. You can always explain your reasoning, and you never act without a thought (which sometimes makes me chuckle at how logical your thought is).

Jackson, you are a true friend to your friends. Yet you are still learning how to navigate the friend world. There are unspoken rules that don't always make themselves clear as you deal with people. We are still trying to figure out how all your systems work. We've pretty much got it all dialed in, but there are still some mysteries we are working with. I'll be honest, that part I wish I could fix right now. I wish I could say that from this day on, you would not "feel tired and just not well" unless we knew you were sick. I think it's going to take more time for me to get there, but know bug I won't stop. I am your biggest supporter. I will always be there to cheer you on, to hold you accountable and to give you all the opportunities to grow into the Godly man that you are on the path to becoming.
Jackson, we've had such a ride these first nine years, I can hardly wait to see what your next nine years bring. I remember that this will be your last year without taking naps because when you were four (I think) you told me that you didn't take naps anymore. You said that you would start taking naps again when you were ten. I completely remember thinking that that was so far away. But it's right around the corner. You became a Bear in Cub Scouts when you turned nine. You declared your school schedule "too tight" to do the school play because rehearsals would be within the school day. You are your own kid, and I couldn't be more proud to be your mom. You turned on a light in my life I didn't know was turned off bug.

No matter what the next years bring, and I know they will bring us more ups and downs, I am confident we will get through them together. I love you more than you will ever know. I promise you I will hold you accountable for your choices and your actions so that you understand what becoming a man of God means. I promise you will continue to grow up in a home that is centered on Christ so that you will know you will never be alone. With your life centered on Christ, you can do anything you choose to do. Jackson, I promise to support your choices, and their consequences (both positive and negative). You are amazing love. I know you know that, and I pray you never forget it.

I love you!!! Love,
Mom

Jackson's 9 year old interview

This year's interview was a difficult one to get. My interviewee did not really want to be interviewed. His favorite answer was "I don't know," so we ended up starting the interview many, many times. Frustrating for mom! But they do capture where Jackson is right now. Completely.

How old are you?
   Nine.

What’s the best thing (so far) about being nine?
Getting more time to hang out with my family. (I'm not really sure how he came to this conclusion...)

What’s the worst thing (so far) about being nine?
That I'm having a lot of infections and not feeling well so far. (He's had either an ear infection, sinus infection or a combination of the two on and off since November. He feels tired all the time. It's frustrating for all of us!)

What makes you happy?
Hanging out with my family and friends.

What is your favorite color?
I don't have one. I like every color.

What is your favorite thing to do at home?
Play. Play with my sister. (He also now really enjoys putting together Legos and still playing with his Imaginext. Oh, and anything related to running around with a Nerf gun is right up there too0.

What is your favorite thing to do at school?
Work. (He loves school! He is the kid who had a fever of 103, and while sitting in the bath trying to get it to come down was sad that he was going to have to miss school).

What is your least favorite thing to do at school?
I don't know...go home. (Yup! Home takes a second place to school. We love it though.)

What’s your favorite activity/sport?
Soccer and football and basketball. (Let me clarify because I had to ask....he likes football only to watch. The other two he loves to play).

What’s your favorite animal?
Don't have one. (Although he LOVES to pour through the encyclopedia type books about animals. I can't even count how many we have).

What’s your favorite holiday?
    Christmas and Halloween.

What do you like about Christmas? Halloween?
     Toys and family. Costumes.

What's your favorite season?
Fall and swinter. I like all of them. But I really like fall.

What’s your favorite food?
Fajitas. (He was sick on his birthday and he really wanted fajitas, but he decided he would rather wait to have them until he was feeling better so he could really enjoy them).

What’s your favorite tv show?
     I don't have one.

What’s your favorite movie?
I don't have one. I'll watch any kind of movie.

What’s your favorite song?
American Idiot by Green Day, Like a g6 by Far East Movement, God is great, Beer is good by ______

What’s your favorite book?
I don't have one. I just like books. (He LOVES the "Who Was" series. We read those every night and have read about all kinds of historical people and events.)

Who is your best friend?
     Ryan, Nicolas, Shelby and Ethan.

What do your want to be when you grow up?
I don't know. I'm not old enough for a job yet. (And try as I might, this was all I was getting.)

Any last thoughts to remember when you are older?
     I'm awesome.

Jackson, you are awesome! Sometimes so awesome it's overwhelming! I love how you love and live with such passion. Keep on being awesome bugaboo!

Jackson's Nerf party, part 2

Like I said before, once the dad's jumped in...it was on. There was an organized madness about everyone and they all loved it. This was honestly the easiest party we have done. Maybe we'll just have a Nerf war every year!

Steve and Dave....waiting!
Magdalyn didn't want to shoot, but she sure loved to pick up the ammo!
Get the dad!!!
Loving every second of this!
I love this picture!
All lined up and ready to fire.
So we did set up a bounce house this year also because it's been one of the things both Jackson and Addison have asked for. But this year it didn't really get used much....I think we are coming to the end of an era. The era of bounce houses, and I know I'm not totally prepared for the era of sleep overs....
My silly girl!
Addie and Magdalyn bouncing without the boys!
Two peas in a pod!
Starting to get a little tired. It's been a long war!
We ended the day cooking hot dogs and s'mores over the fire outside. It was the perfect ending to celebrate our nine year old!
This was what I walked into while going to get the hot dogs....it's always Halloween here!

Jackson's Nerf party, part 1

Birthday party planning this year was all about beating the deadline! Jackson knew exactly what kind of party he wanted...a Nerf War. He talked about it ALL year and for probably the first time in his nine years didn't waver from this. So we embraced Nerf!! I had already postponed the party, and going into the week prior to his party I was not feeling the best. But what's a mom to do? Suck it up and bake the cake! I thought we had convinced Jackson to do cupcakes this year, and oh did that backfire on me. We did convince him to do cupcakes, but he didn't think that was in place of a cake. He thought it was cupcakes WITH a cake. And one thing I have learned over the past nine years is that I really have to pick my battles, and honestly, this wasn't one that I wanted to pick.

Thank goodness for pintrest! We found a Nerf cake and a new recipe for a GF cake to try. (That is my one part of eating GF that I have just not been able to get exactly right). I intended to bake the cake Friday afternoon and then frost it early the next morning and squeeze in cupcakes somewhere. Well, it didn't happen and I didn't get the cake baked until Saturday morning. I honestly have no idea how it all came together, but I was able to run to the store, frost the cake, bake the cupcakes and frost those, plus I still had time to shower and eat lunch.

All the Nerf was laid out and arranged on the table outside. Ammo was in reload stations. All had been tested to ensure proper shooting range. I had to confiscate a few darts as they flew threw the kitchen. Dave and Jackson set up the pallets in the back as places to hide. I thought Jackson was going to explode with excitement as he waited for everyone to get here.

Friends arrived and kids grabbed guns. Sometimes the war was boys against girls, other times it was not. It must have been a kid thing, because I honestly had a tough time keeping up with who was "on what team." This wasn't too big of a deal, but rules and order are important to Jackson so there were times he had to stop and regroup everyone.

The group!
And it's on!!!
Thank goodness it was a gorgeous day. The adults got to sit on the patio, in the "no fire unless you are a parent" zone, while the kiddos ran from front to back and through the house. We had Nerf everywhere!
Addie leading them into battle...
Bunkered down.
Run, run!!!
The boys...Jackson was so done with pictures! He just wanted to play!!
This is what I got for taking pictures. LOL!
William, on the go.
Nicolas, armed and ready!!!
We stopped mid-war for some cake (which was a much better recipe this time), and then it was back on! We had vanilla cake with buttercream icing, as well as carrot cake cupcakes with bright orange icing. It was funny to hear the conversation outside because they were all talking about how the food was GF. Life in our house mainly is!
Make a wish!
After the cake break, the dad's jumped into the war. This was what Jackson and the other kids had been waiting for. I honestly don't know who had more fun...the kids or the dad's. Poor Dave got ambushed a few times. It was special treatment for the birthday boy's dad.
Can't you hear her war cry?

Steve kept hitting Jackson and then ducking...he didn't know where they were coming from.
All ready to go!
